Qualifications:

B.S. degree in environmental or health related field. Registration as a Kansas environmental health sanitarian desired. Background in natural sciences and public health principles. Ability to understand the science behind the enforcement and education related to this department. Must possess a valid Kansas driver’s license.

Responsibilities:

Essential Job Functions: Evaluate private domestic wells, wastewater systems and provide recommendations. Inspect sites for code violations. Investigate public complaints. Draw water samples. Maintain records on all inspections and findings. Document findings on approved forms. Perform efficient use of GRS equipment, downloading points, and the creation of maps on Arc GIS. Perform animal bite/criminal neglect investigations. Perform school inspections. Perform and educate regarding the seasonal mosquito collection. Educate and enforce the state wastewater and well code (ART .30, Bulletin 4-2). Educate contractors and homeowners on codes, correct forms and wastewater matters to ensure appropriate application on each site. Work with other agencies and departments on parcel development. Educate the public on water quality. Participate and stay active in quality improvement projects within the Environmental Health Program. Respond to citizen requests, or, if applicable, refer them to the appropriate agencies. Perform inspections on sanitary service trucks, as needed for licensure and complaints. Assist Planning and Zoning with building permit investigations regarding well and wastewater issues. Assist in the review process for new subdivisions, lot splits and environmental assessment. Perform Day Care and Foster Care initial well and wastewater system and draw water sample for state lab analysis. Perform health and welfare inspections with DCF when requested. Assist Assistant Director and/or Quality Improvement Chair with ongoing quality improvement initiatives.

Other Information:

Job Objectives: Ensure enforcement of the Reno County Sanitation Code through the provision of education, inspection and technical assistance services. Conduct mortgage inspections of residential water and wastewater systems. Investigate water borne illnesses, animal bites, and sanitation complaints.
