Position Requirements: Graduation from an accredited law school and admission to practice in the State of Kansas. Pass a criminal background check. Kansas statute requires that an attorney practicing in a district attorney’s office confine his or her practice of law to the business of the district attorney’s office. An Assistant Reno County District Attorney may not practice law outside the confines of his or her duties associated with the office. Be a resident of Reno County within three months of being hired for the position. Certifications / Licenses: Maintain a valid license to practice law and comply with all requirements for continuing legal education in Kansas.
Job Purpose and Objectives: The primary duty of the Assistant District Attorney is to seek justice within the bounds of the law, not merely to convict. The Deputy District Attorney serves the public interest and should act with integrity and balanced judgment to increase public safety both by pursuing appropriate criminal charges of appropriate severity, and by exercising discretion to not pursue criminal charges in appropriate circumstances. The Assistant District Attorney should seek to protect the innocent and convict the guilty, consider the interests of victims and witnesses, and respect the constitutional and legal rights of all persons, including suspects and defendants. Principal duties include prosecution of juvenile and criminal cases for the state. In addition, duties include effective representation in juvenile and civil forfeiture matters.
