Qualifications:

Shall be at least 18 years of age. Must hold and maintain a valid Kansas driver’s license. Shall be screened for a record of criminal activity before job duties are assigned that might expose the candidate to KCJIS-sensitive information. Shall be screened for a record of criminal activity and criminal history using a fingerprint-based check within 30 days of initial employment of assignment. Knowledge of medical investigative practices and techniques. Prior experience in Law Enforcement or Emergency Services.

Responsibilities:

Candidate acts as a Medical Representative on behalf of the Coroner. The candidate performs many of the responsibilities and exercises similar authority as would the coroner if he/she were present. To determine and provide for post-mortem examinations at death scenes. Refers cases to the Sedgwick County Forensic Science Center for determination of cause of death. Per K.S.A. 22a-232 upon receipt of notice pursuant of K.S.A. 22a-231, takes charge of the dead body, make inquiries regarding the cause of death, and reduce the findings to a report in writing. Communicate with the Coroner, law enforcement personnel, medical personnel, and families of the deceased promptly and as needed. Confer directly with the Reno County District Attorney and staff. Be available to coordinate with law enforcement personnel to ensure proper investigation procedures and training of personnel relating to death scene investigations. Take possession of evidence, when unavoidable, and insure it is turned over to the proper law enforcement agency. Assist in consultations with the family members regarding death scene investigations. Respond promptly to death scenes and conduct independent and thorough investigation into the circumstances of death. Question witnesses, relatives, and other persons to obtain pertinent information regarding the decedent. Gather detailed medical history and follow-up information as needed including, but not limited to, medical records and police reports. Gather additional data as requested by the District Attorney or District Coroner Identify and ensure a chain-of-custody is maintained on all evidentiary items at a death scene. Gather data to aid in the determination of cause and manner of death. Compile clear and concise reports of death scenes detailing the circumstances surrounding the death, medical history, related data, and follow-up material. Photograph death scenes, as necessary. Take custody of personal effects and therapeutic drugs at crime scenes when necessary. Identify the identity of the deceased individual at a death scene. Perform any other related tasks requested by the District Coroner in performing his/her official duties.
